Mastodon [1]is free and open-source software for running self-hosted social networking services.

After the entrepreneur Elon Musk announced the takeover of Twitter Inc. in April 2022, tens of thousands of users created accounts on Mastodon, including celebrities. The quantity of hourly posts more than doubled (from roughly 5,000 in April 2021 to around 10,000 in April 2022), which led to performance problems for some servers. Mastodon thus had over five million registered users for the first time in mid-April 2022. After the completed Twitter acquisition at the end of October 2022, there was an extremely sharp increase in accounts and posts: While there were six million at the beginning of November, there were already over eight million users at the beginning of December 2022. In January 2023, the activity of active users fell by about 30 percent compared to the previous month, and in February, the number of active users fell further. The number of active users fell further.

As microblogging is assessed as a relevant medium for science communication and intra-industry knowledge transfer, the move of scientists to Mastodon has been considered in various places as a contribution to Open Science[2]
