Nicolaas Wilhelm Pieter Rauwenhoff (* July 6, 1826 in Amsterdam; † December 17, 1909 in Utrecht) was a Dutch biologist

The first son of the merchant Jan Hendrik Rauwenhoff (* June 11, 1799 in Amsterdam; † September 11, 1833 in Amsterdam) and the painter Anna van Heurn (* June 21, 1798 in 's-Hertogenbosch; † September 7, 1875 in Tongeren), he lost his father at a very young age. His mother therefore moved to Haarlem, where he spent most of his youth and attended the schools there with his brother Lodewijk Willem Ernst Rauwenhoff. He continued this education in 1845 at the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam, where Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel became his formative teacher. After passing his university entrance examination in Amsterdam on December 13, 1845, he enrolled at the University of Utrecht on June 4, 1846. Encouraged in particular by Gerardus Johannes Mulder and Pieter Harting, Rauwenhoff obtained his doctorate in natural sciences in Utrecht on June 21, 1853 with his thesis on photosynthesis De viridium plantarum partium cum aëris oxygenio et acido carbonico necessitudine. This thesis was published under the Dutch title Onderzoek naar de betrekking der groene plantendeelen tot de zuurstof en het koolzuur des dampkrings onder invloed van het zonnelicht (freely translated: Investigations into the relationship of the green parts of plants to the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, under the influence of sunlight). After working briefly in Brummen, he became a scientific food inspector in Utrecht in 1854. In 1859 he succeeded Miquel at the Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam and on February 7, 1860 he became a lecturer in botany at the clinical school in Rotterdam. On February 13, 1871, he was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Utrecht, a post he took up on April 21, 1871, with a speech on the development of the direction and significance of plant physiology at the time, De tegenwoordige richting en beteekenis der planten-physiologie uit hare geschiedenis toegelicht. In his capacity as Utrecht university lecturer, he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the alma mater in 1884/85.After twenty-five years as a professor, he gave his farewell address on June 17, 1896 with a lecture on the development of botany over the last 50 years and was retired from his professorship on September 15 of the same year with a pension of 3,000 guilders.
