He was a neurologist and studied in St. Petersburg and at the University of Dorpat. From 1912 he worked in the clinic of nervous and mental diseases in Rostov-on-Don, from 1921 assistant, in 1923 he received the title of doctor of medicine. In 1925 he described the symptoms of the disease, later called Cushing's syndrome after Harvey Cushing. Cushing called polyglandular syndrome, and independent in 1924, by the Odessa specialist
