Histoire d'O, (English:Story of O) is an erotic novel published in 1954 by French author Anne Desclos under the pen name Pauline Réage, and published in French by Jean-Jacques Pauvert.
Susan Sontag cited the Story of O in her essay The Pornographic Imagination as an example of the legitimacy of demanding pornography as an independent literary genre. Andrea Dworkin advocated as part of its campaign against pornography in general and sadomasochistic literature in particular the argument that the figure of O was only created by a male author to promote the subjugation of women. Frederick Wyatt argues that the apparent resilience of the O facilitate, as well as their inviolability against all hardships to enjoy the sadomasochistic literature and here provides a proximity to the function of catharsis in classical Greek Tragedy.[1]
