The Democratic Party is a political party in the United States. The main opposition party to the Democrats is the Republican Party; consequently, the United States has a two-party system.
History
The party was founded in 1828.[1] Andrew Jackson, Franklin D. Roosevelt (who was President from 1933 to 1945), and John F. Kennedy were all Presidents from the Democratic Party. Historically, the party dominated in the Southern United States, but with political parties in the United States changing positions on important issues, its voter base has moved away from this region. The most recent President from the Democratic Party was Barack Obama, who was President from 2009 to 2017.
Position
The party occupies the left wing of American politics, and progressive members of its party lean toward a socialist perspective. It is socially liberal on issues like abortion and immigration.
The party is associated with the color blue.
