PMID is a free search engine accessing primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics. The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health maintains the database as part of the Entrez system of information retrieval.

Alle referenties in PubMed hebben een uniek nummer, de PubMed identifier, afgekort met PMID. Dit nummer staat soms bij wetenschappelijke literatuurverwijzingen vermeld, omdat door dit nummer in te voeren in het PubMed zoekscherm de betreffende referentie zeer snel terug te vinden is

All references in PubMed have a unique number, the PubMed identifier, abbreviated PMID.
