Éire, also known as the Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann), is a Catholic country in northwestern Europe. It occupies about five-sixths of the island of Ireland. In the 1800s there was a famine in Ireland, and as a result, large numbers of people left the country and moved to the United States. The northern part of the island of Ireland is called Northern Ireland and is a part of the United Kingdom.
