A monarchy is a government type where a country is ruled by a single leader, whose position is hereditary, although the actual power of the monarch may be reduced by a constitution or even be entirely symbolic. The leadership typically comes with a title, such as king, prince, or emperor, which can be an indication of their relation to neighbouring monarchies and may be bestowed upon them by a coronation ceremony, often carried out by a representative of the prevailing religion. In historical perspective, a line of monarchs from the same family is called a dynasty.
