A micronation is a small organization that mimics or simulates a country. The term is no indication of the size of the entity's territorial claim, which can vary from e.g. a playground or room to an entire universe, whereas other micronations do not claim any land at all or present themselves as virtual.

While some micronations have serious intentions, and a few have managed a degree of independence or are anomalies resulting from worldly affairs, most exist as an educational project, fantasy, game, hobby, or similar undertaking.

Micronations should not be confused with microstates, which are internationally recognized countries of a small size like Liechtenstein or Monaco.
