Freedom is the state in which an individual or a group of people are independent, typically from an individual or a tyrannical government. The concept of freedom can be applied in many different ways, but generally, freedom is how people see themselves as having a wide range of rights, which fit into the scale of their own beliefs and values. Freedom is seen as key in, for example, the United States; this is demonstrated in the famous Statue of Liberty. Following the Civil War in the United States, all slaves within the country were set free.

The Merriam-Webster website defines "freedom" as "the quality or state of being free" and gives further detail to define it as "the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action"; "liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another"; "the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous"; and other definitions.[1]
